Last we heard from our friend in Spain, Luis Alarcos, his SWM Gordini arrived and restoration plans were being put in place.

But it’s been nearly a year since we’ve heard from Luis so I dropped him a short note last week.  Great news gang…..he has been off and running with the restoration of his SWM Gordini.  In the past year, he has successfully talked with Christian Mannl whose father and uncle designed and built the car, and has been tracking down all of the parts needed to complete the restoration – including the elusive front windshield which has been a mystery to us for years (even with the Mannl family helping to identify what they remembered using).  As you’ll see in the story below, this problem may now be solved.

So let’s begin with today’s story – a recent update on the restoration progress I received from Luis about his SWM Gordini.  And away we go 🙂

Letter From Luis Alarcos: September 9, 2021

Dear Geoff:

I have ordered the last remaining BMW 2000CS Windshield unit with the installation hardware (rubbers) available. I’m almost 100% sure it’s that one, the measurements are almost the same, but it depends a lot on how you measure it.  Here are photos for comparison:

 

We have already disassembled the whole front of the car and have seen that the disc brakes from a BMW were fitted as well as the rims. The steering is from the Renault 8.  At an old upholsterer in Valladolid, we have found the roof upholstery that was used on the Renault 8 as well and these are the ones installed on the SWM.

The repair of the doors has been very laborious, because we had to remove all the wood that was glued to the fibre and without damaging it, we have put the plywood panels back in between the fibre, gluing it and leaving it the same way it was.

It is a very nice project that I am very excited to finish.
