The 1954 Allard Clipper

77 In appearance this plastic body is similar to the best coachwork of the more orthodox kind, but amongst its many claims to distinction is the fact that, in the event of damage, the effected part can be cut out and a liquid repairing material poured into the cavity, backed, of course, by some such based as cardboard to act as a temporary barrier, and when set and rubbed down such a repair s practically undetectable. It must be borne in mind that the material used for the construction of the body has its color integral with it and not as a surface finish. Colors available are pastel maroon or blue with an ivory top, or ivory throughout and the bodywork is produced specially by HordernRichmond, Ltd. Other details of the Allard Clipper include a petrol tank just over 2 and 1/2 gallons in capacity, fitted with a reserve tap and feeding the Villiers carburetor by gravity. Although no opportunity was found to test the all-out speed of the Clipper, nor yet its fuel consumption, the claim of the manufacturers that it will attain 40 mph and cover 70 miles on a gallon of petrol would not appear to be unreasonable. Price has been announced as 255 guineas including purchase tax. Among the extras available are seats to convert the rear locker to accommodate two passengers. Caption: The single front wheel is mounted on a robust trailing arm with overhung spindle. As is the case of each rear wheel, front suspension is by an Andre rubber-incompression unit, an “exploded” view of which is given above. Tires on the Clipper are Goodyear 4.00 inch by 8.00 inch balloon type.
