1 Who We Are and What We Do Creating this book allows me to share with you how our organization has grown and the accomplishments we ’ ve achieved. None of this was planned when Rick D ’ Louhy and I started Forgotten Fiberglass back in 2007. Through triumph and failure we have continued to grow, change and even redefine ourselves. Our new name as of 2018 reflects the expansion and maturity of our company— Undiscovered Classics . In 14 short years and with the support of some of the finest people in the automotive community, we ’ ve been able to establish ourselves as the “ go to ” place for learning the detailed stories of handbuilt sports cars in postwar America. While this subject was touched on over the years, we took on the challenge of diving deep into this subject without knowing what we would find. What we did find we now characterize as: “ The Greatest American Car Story NEVER Told. ” And tell this story is what we do. Through TV, cable and web - based shows. Through articles on our website. Through podcasts on the net. Through presentations at museums, car shows and exhibitions. Through magazines articles and book chapters. And hardest of all – through finding these cars, researching their history, locating their builders and families, restoring the cars for ourselves and our customers and sharing what we have restored on the finest concours fields of the world. Our great friend Rollie Langston created the best and most accurate “ unique selling proposition ” for us that one could want: “ We find, research, restore, show and sell America ’ s lost Automotive Treasures ” One of the most interesting paradoxes that came from our research was learning how well - known these cars were back in the postwar era and just how forgotten they have become in recent years. But there ’ s a reason why this happened – these cars were exceedingly rare then – and are even more so now. John Bond, editor and owner of Road & Track Magazine who had an affinity for “ American Specials ” spoke to this very point. In a 1977 letter to Ray Scroggins who was writing about these handcrafted cars for Special Interest Autos, he estimated that in the 1950s there were less than a thousand “ American Specials ” built across America. You can do the math. Based on survival rate, It ’ s easy to see how cars so rare back then can be nearly non - existent today. But we found that was not the case. Many of these cars survived because of the effort of the people who built them not wanting their cars to disappear. And for those that found these cars in later years without their history, these people found something of original design that captured the imagination and begged the questions “ how and why. ” These cars have survived and we are finding them. We want you to join us too. We invite you to participate with us at Undiscovered Classics in finding these cars, restoring these cars, owning these cars and telling their story. Join us, have fun and make a difference in saving automotive history. That ’ s our message and that ’ s your challenge. If you say “ yes, ” we welcome you to the best and most unique car experience you will ever have. Welcome to Undiscovered Classics.
