9 1955 LeGene “ Californian ” Roadster (2010) Acquired from a west - coast collector in 2009, restoration began in earnest after arriving in our Tampa, Florida facilities. And while we ultimately found 4 of these cars concentrated on the west coast, it wasn ’ t until 2015 in which we were able to identify the car and the family/company that built it—the Dodson family of San Bernardino, California. Like many entrepreneurs who were both creative and talented in the postwar years, they put their talents to use and formed a company and car called the “ LeGene. ” It was named for the father who financed the company— ” Gene ” and the son who designed and built most of the cars— ” Lee. ” Jay Dodson, a younger brother, also helped build the cars. Six cars in total were built along with six bodies. Four cars have been found and one body—a high survival rate by any measure. Our Undiscovered Classics team took on the restoration in 2009 and debuted the car at the 2010 Amelia Island Concours d ’ Elegance. It later made appearances at the Boca Raton Concours d ’ Elegance and other shows and remained on display at the Sarasota Classic Car Museum in Sarasota, Florida until it was sold to a collector and his museum in Orlando, Florida—where it resides on display today.
