11 1962 Shark Roadster (2013) This car is a permanent part of the Undiscovered Classics collection and that ’ s because it ’ s the car I ’ ve had the longest in my possession. The acquisition of this car on August 4, 1980 set the stage for years later what would become Undiscovered Classics. And while this car had been restored by me when I was in my late teens, the restoration we undertook in 2012 and early 2013 pushed our teams skills to new levels. But more about the car first. The Shark Roadster was based on the Shark Coupe. The coupe was designed and built by Henry Covington and Glenn Gums. Glenn Gums was his initial business partner who helped build the first two Shark coupe bodies. After these two bodies were built, each partner retained one body at which time the partnership ended. Covington succeeded in building the first Shark coupe and made it into several magazines including the cover of Mechanix Illustrated—after which he passed away. Gums continued work on his body and changed the car to a convertible— something that had been in the plans but never executed by Henry Covington. Both the Shark coupe and convertible have the most complex shapes of any fiberglass sports car built in the 50s or 60s with 6 of each type having been produced. Once the Shark roadster shown here was restored, it debuted at the 2013 Amelia Island Concours d ’ Elegance. It has been shown at the Hershey Excellence, on display at the AACA Museum in Pennsylvania, and has been shown on television including Jay Leno ’ s Garage and Autoweek TV. The car is on permanent display at the Sarasota Classic Car Museum in Sarasota, Florida.
