15 1950 Leo Lyons Custom Mercury (2015) Leo Lyons started his project in the early 1950s finishing 10 years later—and his car was a smash on the show circuit. So much so that it ’ s first magazine appearance was on the cover of “ Custom Cars Magazine ” in February, 1960. Soon to follow were more magazine and show appearances culminating with the recognition as one of the “ Nation ’ s Top Showcars ” by Trend, Inc., in their 1961 Annual Trend Book on Custom Cars (edited by George Barris). The car represented extreme metal - shaping effort by Leo Lyons who worked under the tutelage of both Sam and George Barris to get the work exactly right. Several pieces of Leo ’ s custom car were crafted by the legendary shop “ California Metal Shaping ” including the top, hood and doors. By the mid 1960s, Leo sold the car and it disappeared off the radar. Though lost for decades, the car was found in the early 2000s by collector and restorer Craig Hahn who we purchased it from. The restoration from start to finish was covered by Autoweek Magazine in an unprecedented 10+ articles chronicling the start of the restoration until it pulled onto the lawn of the Pebble Beach Concours d ’ Elegance in August, 2015.
