21 1953 Kaiser Dragon (2019) Who wouldn ’ t be fascinated with the history of a luxury car known to few—and called the “ Dragon. ” I ’ ve been intrigued by these cars since I was a teenager (lo so many years ago) when I learned that Kaiser developed a special type of vinyl for their dragons—a style of vinyl that looked like bamboo and was available in several colors—and their Dragons had a vinyl top made of this material. But wait—there was more. The interior designed for the Dragon won awards across the industry. The Belgium cloth design was created by Marie Nichols who was a well - known European designer, and the entire look and feel of the interior was created by Carleton Spencer—a celebrated automotive interior designer who was on the Kaiser - Frazer staff. Kaiser Dragons were made for 6 months in 1953 and production ceased. They had not even put out an ad on the model before Kaiser - Frazer changed direction and started shutting automobile production down in the USA. By 1955 Kaiser no longer produced automobiles. Just 1277 examples of Dragons were built. Few remain today. In 2017 we located a beautiful example but one that had been in long - term storage. And …. several aspects of the Dragon needed to be addressed such as procuring a rare new vinyl top and a full mechanical restoration. By early 2018 our restoration was complete and we began to share our Dragon with others. In early 2019 our Dragon was sold to a new customer in the mid - west who promptly took it to the Concours d ’ Elegance of America in Plymouth, Michigan where it was recognized by Car & Driver magazine as one of their 10 favorite cars on the field.
