23 1953 Allied “ Cisitalia ” Swallow (2019) The Atlas - Allied car company in Los Angeles was one of a vast number of specialist car makers that sprang up in postwar America. The Allied Swallow is based on the Cisitalia 202 coupe, one of the most iconic Italian sports cars of the 1940s and 1950s. The first Swallow was conceived by Bill Burke, originator of the first Belly Tank racer, and speed equipment supplier/racer Mickey Thompson in 1952. It ’ s estimated that 25 coupes and roadsters were sold before the company closed in 1955. For comparison, Cisitalia built 170 of their 202 coupes and roadsters over a similar period of time. It ’ s strange to think but the American version of the Cisitalia is far more rare than the car it ’ s based on.. This rare coupe was actually purchased from a Road & Track advertisement in the July 1957 edition - but not until 2014! Amazingly, the car was still with that same seller, where it had languished for 57 years, stored on jack stands and still with its original tires. The car has been carefully recommissioned by its owner to preserve its unrestored patina. We brought the car to its new home in Tampa, Florida and basic issues were addressed. But the patina was so nicely preserved that we protected it for the next owner and it was sold that way. The new owner ’ s first stop was the 2019 Pebble Beach Concours d ’ Elegance—our third car to appear there since 2012.
