Missing The Boat: War Stories of Thomas Alan Dirkin
55 When I emigrated to America in July 1978, my father gave me a small bible that his mother had given to him in 1939. He thought it might be useful on the next step in my life’s journey. Did the bible guide him? He read the bible during his time in solitary confinement, cover to cover. I am unsure about the face value of what he read, but I think it is fair to report this gift in my account of my father’s life, as he is not here to speak for himself. Overall, my father believed in a higher power or guiding force. His experiences were his primary evidence in the clarity of his relationship with that force. His readings and education may have played a role, but not over and above his conclusions drawn from his experiences.
