Description

Eric Irwin’s Lancer is one of those elusive creatures that automotive historians have heard about for years, but never spotted one alive.  This rare piece of American sports car history sheds all doubt of their existence and helps place an anchor during a legendary time of sports car development.

Eric Irwin and his friend Bill Tritt both starting building boats in the late 1940s in their adjacent businesses on Industrial Way in Costa Mesa, California.  In 1950, Bill Tritt of Glasspar took on a special order for one of his customers – a fiberglass body for a Willys-based sports car that he was building.  Tritt argued that fiberglass would give the car an edge due to its lightweight composition, and work began that same year.  Irwin and Tritt were friends and Irwin decided that he would build a car too – but for himself – and the race was one.

According to author Joseph Wherry in Modern Man (November, 1952) Bill Tritt was test driving the Glasspar in June of 1951 but Irwin beat him by a month test driving his – May 1951.  Irwin called his car the “Lancer” and Tritt named his car the “Glasspar G2”.  Both debuted at the November 1951 Petersen Motorama in Los Angeles, California.

Over the next few years, Bill Tritt went on to build over 100 fiberglass cars and bodies.  This was possible because of the size of his business and the resources and people he employed.  Eric Irwin – still a friend of Bill Tritt – ultimately built 6 cars and 6 bodies and offered three different styles of his Lancer.  Interestingly, both cars, a Lancer and a G2, would be featured in the film “Johnny Dark” in 1954 starring Tony Curtis, Don Taylor and Piper Laurie.  The Lancer offered for sale is just one of three factory cars known to exist and the only one restored.

This  Car

This Irwin Lancer marks a significant time in postwar America when what was considered an American Sports car was still being defined.  A perfect fit for an automotive museum as well as a private collection needing a rare American stand-out sports car.  No doubt this will be the only Lancer seen at a concours or car event or on display in any museum across the world.
